Day Trip Recycled Paper Making Community Project

Duration: 3 hour(s) - Location: Thyolo

Arts and crafts in the tea estates! Morning day trip to learn how to make recycled paper products with this small recycling project in the tea fields of Thyolo District.

Nchima Paper Recycling Centre has been supported by a charitable organisation called The Nchima Trust which was established in 1962 by the Gardiner family. The aim of this trust is to provide support to local projects in Malawi including education, orphan care support, and health. With help from the Trust, Nchima Centre was constructed on land leased to the Trust, by the Nchima Tea and Tung Estates with the aim of giving local people a platform to conduct small businesses and display their talents in order to support themselves economically. Apart from paper recycling, other projects like farming and carpentry are also conducted at this centre.

Learn how to recycle paper: two friendly and experienced local artists will take you through the whole process of making paper and you will be able to participate and make your own paper in the process.

Head artist Mr Dickson will then show you his designing skills through the use of locally available materials. Get creative by making your own cards and decorate them using local materials.
